Actor Nicholas Christopher has been receiving mid-show standing ovations during his turn as Anatoly Sergievsky in the 2025 revival of “Chess.” Anatoly is the Russian chess champion, raised from childhood to be a winning machine, and Christopher taps into that pressure and emotional prison in his performance.

While Christopher has multiple Broadway credits to his résumé — including the 2017 revival of “Miss Saigon,” “Hamilton” and the 2023 revival of “Sweeney Todd” — this recognition for “Chess” marks his first Tony Award nomination.

In the podcast episode below of “5 minutes with a Tony nominee,” Christopher discusses the origins of the note he holds for what seems like forever, the firsthand research he did for the role and more.
