Stephen McKinley Henderson to lead Broadway transfer of ‘Between Riverside and Crazy’

Second Stage Theater has announced casting for the Broadway premiere of “Between Riverside and Crazy.” Previews of the play are scheduled to begin at the Hayes Theater on Nov. 30 ahead of an official opening night of Dec. 19.

Second Stage Theater has announced casting for the Broadway premiere of “Between Riverside and Crazy.” Previews of the play are scheduled to begin at the Hayes Theater on Nov. 30 ahead of an official opening night of Dec. 19.

Most cast members from the off-Broadway company will reunite for the Broadway run, including Stephen McKinley Henderson in the lead role of Walter “Pops” Washington. He’ll be joined by fellow off-Broadway castmates Victor Almanzar, Elizabeth Canavan, Rosal Colón, Liza Colón-Zayas and Michael Rispoli.

Casting for the role of Junior will be announced shortly.

Austin Pendleton will direct the Pulitzer Prize-winning play from Stephen Adly Guirgis. Other members of the creative team include Walt Spangler (scenic design), Alexis Forte (costume design), Keith Parham (lighting design) and Ryan Rumery (original music/sound design). Casting by is by Telsey + Company.

“Between Riverside and Crazy” first premiered at Atlantic Theater Company’s Linda Gross Theater in July 2014 and then transferred to Second Stage’s Tony Kiser Theater in February 2015 for an off-Broadway encore. The Broadway engagement is produced under the leadership of Second Stage’s president and artistic director Carole Rothman and executive director Khady Kamara.
