The upcoming Broadway mounting of “Small Mouth Sounds” has moved its first preview. Previously announced to begin performances on Feb. 18, 2027, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, the Bess Wohl play will now start previews on Feb. 10. The March 11 official opening date has not changed, and the drama will still play a limited run to June 2027.
Directed by three-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, “Small Mouth Sounds” will star Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd, Sarah Paulson, Martin Freeman, Greta Lee and Isaac Powell. The play follows six strangers, who travel to an upstate spiritual retreat planning to escape their problems, introspect and transform. But as the adage goes, “Man plans, and God laughs.”
“Small Mouth Sounds” made its world premiere Off-Broadway in 2015 in a production from Ars Nova. Wohl made her Broadway debut with the 2020 mounting of “Grand Horizons,” for which she earned a Tony nomination for Best Play. This past season, her play, “Liberation,” won the Tony for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Broadway’s “Small Mouth Sounds” will feature scenic design by Tony winner Chloe Lamford, costume design by An D’Huys, lighting design by two-time Tony winner Jack Knowles, sound design by Olivier winner Tom Gibbons, music by Pulitzer Prize winner and Tony nominee Caroline Shaw and movement by JA Collective.
“Small Mouth Sounds” is being produced on Broadway by Scott Rudin and Barry Diller.
