An adaptation of the Tony Award-nominated musical “Operation Mincemeat” is now available for licensing by eligible youth theater groups through Concord Theatricals. Theater groups in North America, the U.K. and Ireland — composed of performers age 19 and younger — can now apply to license an adapted, full-length version of the musical comedy, titled “Operation Mincemeat: The Expanded Cast.” While the show was written for and professionally performed by five actors, the adaptation is designed for a cast of 13 to 87 actors, who can play the musical’s more than 100 characters.
“One of the questions we get asked the most is, ‘Will there ever be a school’s version of Operation Mincemeat?’” said the writing team of David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts in a joint statement. “There’s a character for every kid in the class, great opportunities for theatricality and physical storytelling and most importantly, plenty of space to let young performers be complete and utter idiots. We can’t wait to see this brilliant (and educational!) story in their hands.”
“Operation Mincemeat” follows the real-life World War II military operation of the same name, in which agents of British intelligence services planted a corpse carrying fictional battle plans in order to misdirect Hitler’s forces. The book, music and lyrics were penned by musical theater writing team SpitLip, composed of Cumming, Hagan, Hodgson and Roberts.
“Mincemeat” premiered at London’s New Diorama Theatre in 2019; the current West End production opened at the Fortune Theatre in 2023. The musical comedy opened at Broadway’s John Golden Theatre on March 20, 2025, where it continues to run today. It was nominated for four Tony Awards that season, including Best Musical. Tours around the globe are also ongoing. “Operation Mincemeat” is produced on Broadway by Avalon.
Concord Theatricals, which recently merged with music conglomerate BMG, licenses plays and musicals to Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional, school and amateur theater companies worldwide. Its recent acquisitions include the musical adaptations of “Smash” and “Almost Famous,” as well as the Tony-winning play “Stereophonic.”
