Music Theatre International has acquired the worldwide licensing rights to the musical “Groundhog Day.”

The Broadway musical, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, opened at the August Wilson Theatre on April 17, 2017 and was nominated for seven Tony Awards. It closed after 176 regular performances.

The musical, based on the 1993 film, had its world premiere in the summer of 2016. Danny Rubin, who wrote the screenplay, also wrote the book of the musical.

When it closed on Broadway, “Groundhog Day” announced that it would embark on an 18-month national tour in 2018 and would announce plans for a return to London. However, Minchin tweeted in January that the tour would not happen.
