The annual gala of Lincoln Center Theater (LCT) will feature a staged reading of the 2013 Best Play Tony Award winner “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.” Directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher, the reading of Christopher Durang’s play will take place on May 7 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, LCT’s Broadway house. The gala will benefit the nonprofit theater company’s productions and educational programs.

Most of the original cast from the Broadway production will reunite for the one-night event. Reprising their roles will be Tony winner David Hyde Pierce as Vanya, Tony nominee Kristine Nielsen as Sonia, Tony nominee Sigourney Weaver as Masha, Tony nominee Shalita Grant as Cassandra and Genevieve Angelson as Nina. David Hull will join them as Spike, a role he played in Los Angeles’ Center Theatre Group staging in 2014.

A satire of Anton Chekhov’s work, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” played the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, LCT’s Off-Broadway venue, from October 2012 to January 2013, following a September 2012 world premiere at McCater Theatre Center in Princeton, New Jersey. The play transferred to Broadway’s John Golden Theatre on March 14, 2023. The production concluded its twice-extended limited run on August 25, 2013. The production was nominated for six 2013 Tony Awards, including nods for Pierce, Nielsen and Grant, and took home the prize for Best Play.
