Berkeley Repertory Theatre has announced the world premiere of “The Thing About Jellyfish.” The play, based on Ali Benjamin’s 2015 novel of the same name, will open on Jan. 31, 2025 and play a limited run through March 9. Tyne Rafaeli will direct the Broadway-aimed piece, which is being adapted for the stage by Keith Bunin. “The Thing About Jellyfish” is being produced in association with Madison Wells Live.
“The Thing About Jellyfish” follows teenaged Suzy Swanson who, in the aftermath of her best friend’s death, uses her imagination to explore not only grief and friendship, but also the scientific wonders of the universe.
“Madison Wells is delighted to be returning to Berkeley Rep to continue our ongoing creative collaboration,” said Jamie Forshaw, Madison Wells Live executive producer, in a statement. “‘The Thing About Jellyfish’ will mark our third partnership; which began in 2022 with ‘Swept Away’ and continues with the upcoming ‘Jaja’s African Hair Braiding’ this fall. We are thrilled to bring this poignant coming-of-age story to life with this exceptional team. ”
Berkeley Repertory Theatre is producing the upcoming touring production of “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” which will also be produced in association with Madison Wells. Led by Forshaw and founder/CEO Gigi Pritzker, Madison Wells previously co-produced “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” on Broadway and is currently represented on the Main Stem as a co-producer on “Water for Elephants.”
