Kristine Nielsen will assume Andrea Martin’s role in “Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus” after Martin injured herself during rehearsals.

Martin is leaving the company after having broken four ribs during rehearsal, according to producer Scott Rudin. Nielsen, who had been playing the role of Carol in the production, will assume Martin’s leading role as Janice.

Nielsen will still star opposite Nathan Lane. Julie White will join the company as Carol, taking over Nielsen’s role.

The cast change has pushed back previews of the Taylor Mac play, so that the show will now begin performances on March 9, rather than Tuesday, March 5. The opening night is still set for April 11 at the Booth Theatre.

“I am heartbroken to have to leave the production and have tried to convince the doctor that my funny bone is stronger than my broken ribs. But regretfully I must follow the doctor’s orders,” Martin said in the press release. “I love everyone involved in this beautiful play and will miss them profoundly. I will be cheering them on from the audience at the Booth Theatre.”

“There is no greater company member than Andrea Martin, and we are heartsick to see her depart the production,” Rudin said. “We wish her the speediest recovery possible.  We are very grateful to both Ms. Nielsen and Ms. White for stepping up and stepping in so swiftly.”
