The Tony Awards will present the Excellence in Theatre Education Award as part of the 2022 ceremony, after the honor was omitted from this year’s presentation.

The award, which was co-founded by the Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University in 2014, is awarded annually to a pre-college arts educator “who [inspires] all with their superlative theatre programs,” according to a release. The award was not presented during the pandemic due to the closure of Broadway and most in-person schooling.

A date has not yet been announced for the 2022 Tony Awards ceremony.

Nominations can be submitted through Jan. 31, 2022 on the Tony Awards website. A panel of representatives from the American Theatre Wing, the Broadway League, Carnegie Mellon University, among other industry organizations, will review the submissions and select the 2022 recipient.

The winning arts educator’s students will receive a masterclass from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama. The teacher will also select two students to receive a scholarship to attend Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama Summer Pre-College Program this summer.

The 2019 award winner was Madeline Michel from Charlottesville, Va.
