The Tony Awards administration committee has revealed the recipients of 2025 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre. Great Performances, Michael Price, New 42 and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts will be recognized with noncompetitive awards.
First bestowed in 1990, the Tony Honors recognize institutions, individuals and/or organizations that have proved themselves inimitable to the theater industry but are not eligible in any of the established Tony Award categories.
“Our Tony Honors recognize the fact that there [is] a multitude of people and organizations working behind the scenes who contribute to great theater, making the journey from page to stage, beyond our traditional categories,” said Broadway League president Jason Laks and American Theatre Wing president and CEO Heather Hitchens in a joint statement. “We are thrilled to celebrate these behind-the-scenes heroes on Broadway’s biggest night.”
Great Performances is a series of PBS, capturing and showcasing live theater, dance and music. Since its inception five decades ago, Great Performances has presented live captures of myriad Broadway productions, including the recent additions of “Yellow Face,” “Suffs,” “Purlie Victorious” and “Girl From the North Country.”
From 1968 to 2014, Price served as executive director of Goodspeed Musicals, the nonprofit organization that presents musicals at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Connecticut. Under Price’s leadership, Goodspeed served as the originating producer for many shows that transferred to Broadway, including the original production of “Annie.” During Price’s tenure, Goodspeed was awarded a Special Tony in 1980, followed by the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 1995.
New 42 was established in 1990 to revitalize seven historic theaters located on West 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues in Manhattan. Today, the nonprofit dedicates itself to lifelong arts exposure and accessibility under the leadership of president and CEO Russell Granet and board chair Fiona Howe Rudin (who will soon be succeeded, as previously announced, by Henry Tisch). Under the umbrella organization of New 42, New 42 Studios has served as the rehearsal space for many Broadway shows in the last 25 years, while the New Victory Theater focuses on youth and family initiatives and programming.
The Performing Arts branch of the New York Public Library, located on the Lincoln Center campus, is the central hub for archival information regarding all areas of the performing arts, including theater, dance, music and recorded sound. The Library’s collection includes approximately eight million items across its various divisions, which comprise the Billy Rose Theatre Division, the Jerome Robbins Dance Divisions, Music Division, the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound and Theatre on Film and Tape Archive.
As previously announced, the 2025 Tony Awards will take place on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall. Cynthia Erivo will host the ceremony. Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce will announce the nominations on May 1.
The Tony Awards are presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
