Disney Theatrical Group has announced that Sherri Shepherd will take over the role of the Genie in Broadway’s “Aladdin” at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The actor, comedian, author and Emmy Award-winning talk-show host will play the magical wish-granter from Oct. 16 through Jan. 3, 2027. This marks the first time a woman has stepped into the role of the Genie in any Disney-produced production of “Aladdin.”
Shepherd will succeed Caleb A. Barnett, who will remain as the standby for the Genie during Shepherd’s stint.

“Joining ‘Aladdin’ on Broadway is an absolute dream come true — and an incredible honor,” Shepherd said in a statement. “The Genie is such an iconic character, and I’m beyond excited to bring my own energy, humor, heart and a little bit of magic to this role. … To step on that stage as the first woman to ever play the Genie is something I don’t take lightly.”
“Throughout her career, Sherri has represented delight, wit, and loving good humor, making her the perfect entertainer to play the life force that is the Genie,” said Disney Theatrical Group managing director Andrew Flatt and executive producer Anne Quart in a joint statement.
Shepherd made her Broadway debut as Madame, better known as the evil stepmother, in 2013’s “Cinderella.” She is best known to television audiences as a co-host of “The View,” for which she won a Daytime Emmy Award, and for hosting shows such as “Dish Nation” and “The Newlywed Game.” She’s also appeared in series such as “30 Rock,” “The Sex Lives of College Girls” and “Trial & Error.”
Adapted from the Disney animated film of the same name, “Aladdin” features music by Tony Award and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman, three-time Tony and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice and six-time Tony nominee Chad Beguelin, with a book by Beguelin. It is directed and choreographed by two-time Tony winner Casey Nicholaw.
Shepherd will join a cast that is currently led by Rodney Ingram as Aladdin, Sonya Balsara as Jasmine and Dennis Stowe as Jafar.
