Manhattan Theatre Club’s (MTC) 2023-2024 Judith Champion Playwriting Fellowship has been awarded to Pulitzer Prize winner Sanaz Toossi.

Toossi will receive a living allowance, access to office and rehearsal space, a ticket stipend and a developmental workshop of one of her plays during her fellowship period. She will have the opportunity to write and develop a new play while in residence at MTC.

Toossi, an Iranian-American playwright, succeeds inaugural fellow Zora Howard. Toossi won the 2023 Pulitzer for Drama for “English.” Her play “Wish You Were Here” was produced at Playwrights Horizons in the spring of 2022. In addition to MTC, Toossi is currently under commission at Atlantic Theater Company, Roundabout Theatre Company, Williamstown Theatre Festival, South Coast Repertory and Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

“We are thrilled to be deepening our relationship with the exceptionally gifted Sanaz Toossi through the Judith Champion Playwriting Fellowship,” Scott Kaplan, MTC’s director of play development, said in a statement. “We have the deepest admiration for Sanaz’s artistry and are over the moon to be collaborating with her during the second year of this vital program.”

MTC is under the leadership of artistic director Lynne Meadow and executive director Chris Jennings. The fellowship is supported by the late Judith Champion, a philanthropist and former MTC patron.
