Winners of the 46th annual Telly Awards were announced on May 20. Broadway was well represented among the victors. The awards, which honor excellence in video and television, range from local broadcast programming and commercials to branded content and social media.
The Pekoe Group won a total of six Tellys, four for the advertising and marketing agency’s work on the Louis Armstrong bio-musical “A Wonderful World” and two for “The Notebook.” Pekoe won gold in the Arts & Culture category and bronze in Entertainment for the on-sale video ad campaign for “A Wonderful World,” which was directed by Bobby Selby. The musical’s post-opening video ad campaign, which featured direction by Clayton Jacobsen, earned silver in Arts & Culture and silver in Entertainment. The Pekoe Group’s Christopher Lueck served as creative director of both initiatives. “The Notebook”’s post-opening video ad campaign, which was also directed by Jacobsen and also featured creative direction by Lueck, won bronze in Arts & Culture and silver in Entertainment.
Super Awesome Friends, the organization that provided social content for “Our Town,” was the bronze winner in Arts & Culture for “Deconstructing ‘Our Town’ on Broadway,” a series of conversations with the creatives of the Tony Award-nominated revival. The videos were directed and edited by Carol Ray Hartsell.
Another video featuring an artist conversation was also cited. CUNY TV’s “All the Moving Parts: Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang on Asian American identity on Broadway,” in which Hwang touched on Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony-nominated revival of “Yellow Face,” won bronze in the Interview & Talk Show category. Hosted by Patrick Pacheco, the segment was produced by Linda Simidian.
Black Theatre United’s “Before The Curtain Rises - The Designers” series, created by Carin Ford and Tony honorees Lisa Dawn Cave and Michael McElroy, won Gold in the Arts & Culture category.
Finally, the American Theatre Wing, the co-presenter of the Tony Awards, won silver in two different categories. The Wing’s “Working in the Theatre” series was acknowledged in the Documentary category, while the “Master Class” series was awarded in the Education & Training series. Both series were directed by Ian Weiss and executive produced by Wing president Heather Hitchens.
