“The Karate Kid” is being developed into a Broadway-aimed musical.

The musical will feature a book by Robert Mark Kamen, the screenwriter of the 1984 film, and music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini. Amon Miyamoto, who directed the 2004 Broadway production of “Pacific Overtures,” will direct the musical, which will feature choreography by Keone and Mari Madrid, who choreograph for pop stars and are also on the creative team for the Britney Spears musical “Once Upon A One More Time.”

“Many people love Broadway musicals for ‘escape’ – but I love them because they provide insight into how we should live our lives,” Miyamoto said in the press release. “I was inspired to do a stage adaptation of ‘The Karate Kid’ because it tells a story we need in this ongoing ‘Age of Division’ as our society becomes increasingly globalized.”

The musical is being produced by Kinoshita Group, Kumiko Yoshii and Michael Wolk. Derek McLane has been tapped to design the musical’s set.

A production timeline and casting will be announced at a later date.
