United Scenic Artists union will hold art pop-up event in December

The two-day event will feature original artwork, costumes and more crafted by the local chapter’s members.

United Scenic Artists Local 829 has announced an art pop-up event to be held in Times Square. The first of its kind for the group, the event will take place on Dec. 9 and 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Scenic artists Lisa Barnstone and Hanna Wellish are organizing the pop up, to be held at the office of another theatrical union, Local 802 American Federation of Musicians, at 322 W. 48th Street in New York City.

Local 829 is a chapter member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the national union representing designers, artists and coordinators who work in the entertainment industry.

The event will feature nearly 40 members of Local 829 selling their original artwork, including paintings, prints, pottery, ceramics, sculptures, clothing, costumes, jewelry and crafts. Proceeds will go directly to each artist. Most of the artists set to sell their wares work primarily in film and television, and have been affected by the recent Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes. However, the art pop up will support a union that represents Broadway’s scenic artists.

“This pop up provides a perfect opportunity for our members — many of whom have been out of work for over a year — to showcase their incredible art and to find support in our community,” said Barnstone and Wellish, in a statement. “This is an opportunity to see and engage our membership from a new perspective and explore work by artists whose creativity and innovation spans multiple mediums, crafts and platforms.”

The event will be open to the public.
