Tony Award nominee Derek Klena will return to “Moulin Rouge!” on Broadway next month. Klena will step back into the role of Christian on Feb. 6. He will succeed Casey Cott, who will play his final performance on Feb. 4 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

This will mark Klena’s third tenure as Christian, having previously played the role from May 2022 through January 2023, and again from April to July 2023. He earned a Tony nomination for his turn in “Jagged Little Pill.” Klena rejoins the cast the same day that Grammy Award winner Boy George steps into the role of Harold Zidler, 20 years after his performance in “Taboo.”

Based on the 2001 film of the same name, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” features direction by Alex Timbers and choreography by Sonya Tayeh. The book by John Logan follows the fictional Christian, a writer newly arrived in Paris, who falls in love with Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub. The production opened on July 25, 2019, and went on to win 10 Tony awards, including Best Musical. The production recouped in 2022.

In addition to Cott, “Moulin Rouge!’ currently features Courtney Reed as Satine, Eric Anderson as Harold Zidler, André Ward as Toulouse-Lautrec, David Harris as the Duke of Monroth, Gabe Martínez as Santiago and Sophie Carmen-Jones as Nini. Casting is by Jim Carnahan and Stephen Kopel.

“Moulin Rouge!” is produced by Carmen Pavlovic and Gerry Ryan OAM for Global Creatures and Bill Damaschke.
