“Bad Cinderella,” a new musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber, is set to open on Broadway in 2023.

Lloyd Webber made the announcement on the morning of Oct. 3 during a press event at the Imperial Theatre, where previews of the new musical will begin on Feb. 17, 2023, ahead of an opening night on Mar. 23.

It was also announced that newcomer Linedy Genao will take on the title role in the musical that is being billed as “an unconventional fairy tale.”

Genao, whose previous Broadway credits include understudy and ensemble gigs in “On Your Feet!” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” told Broadway News she was offered the role of Cinderella by Lloyd Webber in person at her last audition back in February, saying it was “the biggest secret ever” and she’s “so grateful to finally let the world know.”

Genao went to London for the first time to work with Lloyd Webber and record the first single for the show in both English and Spanish. “I’ve literally felt like a princess and we haven’t even started yet,” Genao said. That song, the musical’s title number, is now available to stream in English. The Spanish version will be released shortly.

When it comes to tackling the role of Cinderella, Genao says she’s “most excited to bring my own authentic self.” Genao, who is Dominican American, added, “To be able to represent the Latin community in this position as a princess, that’s not something I had growing up and so it’s the honor of a lifetime and I don’t take it lightly.”

“Bad Cinderella” features music by Lloyd Webber, a book by Emerald Fennell and lyrics by David Zippel. Laurence Connor will direct and JoAnn M. Hunter will choreograph.

A previous musical with the same creative team, titled “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Cinderella,'” wrapped up a London premiere starring Carrie Hope Fletcher in the title role in spring of 2022.

“Bad Cinderella” is produced on Broadway by No Guarantees (including president Christine Schwarzman and executive vice president Darren Johnston) and the Really Useful Group. Wagner Johnson Productions serves as executive producers.
