Bryce Pinkham wasn’t initially trained as a musical theater actor. Pinkham studied at the Yale School of Drama and expected he’d build a career performing in straight plays. Well, Broadway had other plans. Pinkham made his Broadway debut originating the roles of Clay/Black Fox in the musical “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.” He continued originating musical roles — first Carl in “Ghost the Musical” and Monty Navarro in “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” for which he earned a Tony Award nomination — before appearing in his first Broadway play, “The Heidi Chronicles.”
This season, Pinkham brings more musical theater acumen to the role of the Arbiter in the revival of “Chess.” Below, the actor explains his familial connection to the musical, his specific take on the Arbiter and more.
“Chess” is nominated for five Tony Awards.

The 2026 Tony Awards will take place on June 7 at Radio City Music Hall. P!NK will host the ceremony, which will be broadcast live on CBS and livestreamed on Paramount+ Premium (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT). CBS and Pluto TV will present the Tony Awards: Act One, with additional details to follow.
