A new Broadway-aimed play has scheduled a world premiere staging Off-Broadway. “Broken Snow,” penned by Ben Andron, will appear at Theatre 71 beginning on April 19, with an opening scheduled for April 30. Colin Hanlon will direct the drama, which is set to play a limited run through May 24.
“Broken Snow” will be produced by Broadway Engine, Daveed Ben-Arie and Willette Klausner in association with NewYorkRep. The three-hander, which its producers say has Broadway aspirations, will star Emmy Award nominees Tony Danza and Tom Cavanagh, along with Michael Longfellow. Casting is by Robin Carus.
The psychological drama centers on two strangers — James, a drifter, and Steven, a police officer — who find themselves stranded in an abandoned house amid a snowstorm and discover that they share the same father.
Andron, a writer, producer and entertainment marketing creative, previously wrote the comedy “White’s Lies,” which ran Off-Broadway at New World Stages in 2010. Andron also wrote the books for “Brave New World: The Musical” and “Bar Mitzvah in Birmingham.” His TV credits include “Hunachi and Friends” and “Heroes.”
Danza has been seen on Broadway in “Honeymoon in Vegas,” “The Producers,” “The Iceman Cometh” and “A View From the Bridge.” He is perhaps most known for his television credits, as a series regular on “Who’s the Boss?” and “Taxi.” Danza was Emmy-nominated for a guest turn on “The Practice.”
Cavanagh earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for “Bang Bang You're Dead.” He headlined the television series “Ed,” for which he earned a Golden Globe Award nomination. His stage credits include Broadway turns in “Shenandoah” and “Urinetown.”
Longfellow is a comedian and actor known for his series-regular gig on “Saturday Night Live.” His credits also include “Ghost of Ruin,” “How to Be Broke” and “Laugh After Dark.” He is currently leading a stand-up comedy tour.
Hanlon made his Broadway debut as a replacement in “Rent.” He later appeared in the 2016 revival of “Falsettos” and the 2016 original musical “In Transit.” Hanlon also played Fiyero in the national tour of “Wicked” and stars in the webseries “Submissions Only.” He appeared as the recurring character Steven on TV’s “Modern Family.”
The “Broken Snow” creative team includes set designer Scott Adam Davis, lighting designer Jeff Croiter, sound designer Bill Toles, costume designer Lisa Zinni, fight coordinator Rod Kinter, props designer Caitlyn Murphy and production manager Mitch Strong. Aaron Grant Theatrical will serve as general manager.
