The Tony Awards administration committee met on Feb. 19 to confirm the eligibility status for five more shows that opened during the 2025-2026 Broadway season. This was the second time the committee has met to decide eligibility for the 79th annual Tony Awards. The first set of rulings can be found here.
Productions discussed include plays “Bug,” “Marjorie Prime” and “Oedipus” and musicals “Chess” and “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).”
The committee meets several times per season to confirm whether productions have completed all requirements, as laid out in the Tony Awards Rules and Regulations, to be eligible for the annual awards and to determine in which of the 26 competitive categories each element of a production will be placed.
The committee made the following determinations (listed in alphabetical order by production):
“Bug” will be considered eligible in the Best Revival of a Play category. Tracy Letts will be considered eligible as author.
Carrie Coon will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play category for her role in “Bug.”
Namir Smallwood will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play category for his role in “Bug.”
Danny Strong (new book) will be considered eligible in the Best Book of a Musical category for his work on “Chess.”
David Rockwell (scenic designer) and Peter Nigrini (video designer) will be considered jointly eligible in the Best Scenic Design of a Musical category for their work on “Chess.”
Brian Usifer will be considered eligible in the Best Orchestrations category for his work on “Chess.”
“Marjorie Prime” will be considered eligible in the Best Revival of a Play category. Jordan Harrison will be considered eligible as author.
“Oedipus” will be considered eligible in the Best Revival of a Play category. Robert Icke will be considered eligible as author.
Christiani Pitts will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical category for her role in “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).”
Sam Tutty will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical category for his role in “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).”
All other eligibility will be consistent with the opening night credits.
As previously reported, all productions must open by April 26 to be considered for the 2026 Tony Awards; nominations will be revealed on May 5.
The 79th annual Tony Awards ceremony will take place on June 7 at Radio City Music Hall. The broadcast will be produced by Raj Kapoor, Sarah Levine Hall and Jack Sussman.
