Producers have announced that actor Sky Lakota-Lynch will play his final performance as Johnny Cade in Broadway’s “The Outsiders” on March 15. A replacement for the role has not yet been announced. Casting for the show is by Xavier Rubiano of the TRC Company.

Lakota-Lynch originated the role of Johnny in the La Jolla Playhouse pre-Broadway run of the musical before continuing on to the Main Stem. The actor earned a 2024 Tony Award nomination for best featured actor in a musical for his performance as the downtrodden Johnny.

“The Outsiders” takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during 1967. It follows rival teen gangs — the greasers and the Socs. The greasers are the misfits from the poor side of town, while the Socs behave like young socialites. The story is told from the perspective of Ponyboy Curtis, a young greaser who’s been orphaned and relies on his two older brothers and his best friend, Johnny. The musical is an adaptation of the famous novel by S.E. Hinton and the subsequent film version from Francis Ford Coppola.

Lakota-Lynch’s nomination was one of 12 for “The Outsiders,” which took home four trophies, include one for Best Musical. “The Outsiders” began previews at Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on March 16, 2024, ahead of an opening night of April 11.

The current company includes Brent Comer as Darrel Curtis, Alex Joseph Grayson as Dallas Winston, Jason Schmidt as Sodapop Curtis and Trevor Wayne as Ponyboy Curtis.

“The Outsiders” features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine, music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay & Zach Chance) and Levine, choreography by Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman and is directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor.

“The Outsiders” is produced on Broadway by the Araca Group, American Zoetrope, Olympus Theatricals, Sue Gilad and Larry Rogowsky and Angelina Jolie.
