The new musical “What’s New Pussycat?” will receive two private industry presentations on June 25 and 26 at New 42 Studios in Manhattan. Flody Suarez is producing the musical, which features a book by Tony Award winner Joe DiPietro and a catalogue of Tom Jones’ pop hits. Luke Sheppard is slated to direct and Olivier Award winner Arlene Phillips will choreograph.

Based on Henry Fielding’s 18th century novel “The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling” (often referred to as the truncated “Tom Jones”), “What’s New Pussycat?” follows a charming young romantic on a madcap quest to win back the love of his life. The musical’s title is taken from the 1965 pop hit of the same name, which will be featured in the show along with other tunes made famous by singer Jones, such as “It’s Not Unusual” and “Delilah.”

The company of “What’s New Pussycat?” will include Taylor Louderman, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, John-Andrew Morrison and Veanne Cox, all Tony nominees for their turns in “Mean Girls,” “Spamalot,” “A Strange Loop” and “Company,” respectively. They will be joined by current “Boop! The Musical” star Erich Bergen. Rounding out the company of the reading will be Dominic Andersen, Kuhoo Verma and David Harris. Casting is by the Telsey Office.

DiPietro is a two-time Tony winner for penning the book and lyrics to “Memphis.” Sheppard is known for helming “& Juliet.” Welsh-born Jones has released over three dozen studio albums during his career, beginning with 1965’s “Along Came Jones.” Phillips won the 2024 Best Theatre Choreographer Olivier Award (with James Cousins) for “Guys and Dolls.”

The creative team of “What’s New Pussycat?” will also include scenic designer Jon Bausor, costume designer Janet Bird, Tony-nominated lighting designer Howard Hudson and Tony-winning sound designer Gareth Owen. Matthew Brind will provide musical arrangements and supervision.

Suarez, who produced “The Cher Show” on the Main Stem, and Wager Johnson Productions will serve as executive producer. Wagner Johnson will also provide general management.
