The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society has appointed Stephanie Coen as its first director of artistic affairs and community engagement.

The new position will include “identifying emerging creative issues and opportunities” and creating “programs to support SDC Members’ leadership and influence.”

“It is necessary for SDC to be proactive about a wide range of important issues—in areas such as political engagement; support for equity, diversity and inclusion efforts; and the advancement of intimacy choreography—that are becoming increasingly present in the lives of our Members,” SDC Executive Director Laura Penn said in a press release.

Prior to joining SDC, Coen was the associate artistic director of Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. She began her career at Theatre Communications Group.

In addition to creating the new position, the SDC is merging its member services and communications departments. Current Director of Member Services Barbara Wolkoff will take on the expanded title of director of member services and communications. She has been on the SDC staff for more than 20 years.
