“Schmigadoon!” has announced an upcoming Picnic Basket Auction. The musical’s star Alex Brightman will host the event, set to take place at the TSQ Stage in Times Square on May 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds raised will be donated to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a nonprofit which funds social services and healthcare causes nationwide.
Brad Oscar, who plays Mayor Menlove in “Schmigadoon!,” will serve as the afternoon’s auctioneer. Other cast members of “Schmigadoon” will make appearances throughout the Picnic Basket Auction.
During the event, a variety of Broadway productions will put unique, themed picnic baskets up for auction, mirroring a scene from “Schmigadoon.” Participating shows include “Aladdin,” “Becky Shaw,” “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” “Chess,” “Chicago,” “Death Becomes Her,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Every Brilliant Thing,” “Fallen Angels,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Giant,” “Hadestown,” “Hamilton,” “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” “The Heated Rivalry Parody Musical,” “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” “Just in Time,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Maybe Happy Ending,” “MJ,” “Moulin Rouge!,” “Operation Mincemeat,” “Proof,” “Ragtime,” “SIX,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “The Balusters,” “The Book of Mormon,” “The Fear of 13,” “The Lion King,” “The Lost Boys,” “The Outsiders,” “The Play That Goes Wrong,” “The Rocky Horror Show,” “Titaníque,” “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York),” “Wicked” and “& Juliet.”
“Schmigadoon!,” based on the Apple TV series of the same name, centers on a bickering couple who wanders into a Golden Age musical and discover that finding true love is the only way to leave. The musical is currently set to run through Jan. 3 at the Nederlander Theatre, and has been nominated for 12 Tony Awards (including Best Musical), tying it with “The Lost Boys” for the most Tony-nominated musical of the season.
Broadway Cares has awarded more than $300 million to people living with HIV/AIDS and other illnesses in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Raising funds through events and the biannual red bucket drive, Broadway Cares is also the largest financial supporter of the Entertainment Community Fund, which provides social, healthcare and other services to members of the entertainment community.
