‘Purlie Victorious’ announces extension

The Leslie Odom Jr.-starrer will run until February 2024.

“Purlie Victorious” is extending its run at the Music Box Theatre. Though the revival of Ossie Davis’ play was not officially announced as a limited engagement, it had only been on sale through Jan. 7, 2024 “Purlie Victorious” will now run through Feb. 4.

Directed by Kenny Leon, the satire stars Leslie Odom Jr. as Purlie Victorious Judson. The cast also features Vanessa Bell Calloway as Idella Landy, Billy Eugene Jones as Gitlow Judson, Noah Pyzik as Deputy, Noah Robbins as Charlie Cotchipee, Jay O. Sanders as Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee, Heather Alicia Simms as Missy Judson, Bill Timoney as Sheriff and Kara Young as Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins. The company also includes Melvin Abston, Willa Bost, Brandi Porter and Donald Webber Jr.

“Purlie Victorious” tells the story of its title character, a preacher looking to buy and rehabilitate the rundown local church — but he needs to claim an inheritance from the plantation owner to do it. Purlie devises a plan, but the Black workers on the plantation all have to deal with the repercussions.

“Purlie Victorious” is produced by Jeffrey Richards, Hunter Arnold, Odom, Irene Gandy, Willette and Manny Klausner and Kayla Greenspan.
