The Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical “MJ” has announced the launch of its international Asian tour. The road production, which was initially announced in July alongside a U.K. tour, will have its premiere at Tokyo’s Tokyu Theatre Orb in January 2027. A performance schedule and additional cities will be announced at a later date. The tour is being produced by Lia Vollack and John Branca, who produced the Broadway mounting, alongside Michael Cassel.
“MJ” opened at Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre on Feb. 1, 2022, where it continues to play. The musical follows Jackson in the lead-up to his “Dangerous World Tour,” punctuated by a series of interviews that flash back to his childhood. “MJ” was nominated for 10 Tonys, including Best Musical, and won four, including Best Choreography for Christopher Wheeldon.
“Japan has given me 30 years of extraordinary experiences creating and performing in the ballet and musical theater, so returning to the Orb — where we brought ‘An American in Paris’ — feels like coming home,” said Wheeldon in a statement. “‘MJ’ is a different kind of electricity, and I can’t wait for Japanese audiences to feel it. Full velocity from this incredible cast. See you in January.”
“MJ” has also been staged in London’s West End, Hamburg and Sydney, in addition to touring productions in the U.S., the Netherlands and Australia.
