In conjunction with its runs on Broadway and in international markets, including London and Hamburg and touring Australia, the Michael Jackson bio-musical “MJ” will open in the Netherlands during the 2027-2028 theater season. Stage Entertainment Nederland is producing the replica production of the Broadway show, which will sit down in a single theater rather than tour.
The Dutch production will use the original English lyrics for Michael Jackson’s songs, which make up the score, while the book’s dialogue will be translated into Dutch. Details regarding the cast, performance schedule and venue will be announced.
Since premiering on Broadway, “MJ” won four Tony Awards and has played to more than 7 million audience members globally. The show centers on the behind-the-scenes creative process of Jackson’s 1992 “Dangerous” world tour. The score features recognizable hits from his catalog, including “Billie Jean,” “Thriller,” “Beat It” and “Smooth Criminal.”
“MJ” features a Tony-nominated book by Lynn Nottage and Tony-nominated direction and Tony-winning choreography by Christopher Wheeldon. The musical features Tony-nominated scenic design with sets by Derek McLane and projections by Peter Nigrini, Tony-winning lighting design by Natasha Katz, Tony-nominated costume design by Paul Tazewell and Tony-winning sound design by Gareth Owen.
“MJ” began Broadway previews on Dec. 6, 2021, and officially opened on Feb. 1, 2022, at the Neil Simon Theatre.
“MJ” is produced on Broadway by Lia Vollack, John Branca and John McClain.
