A new musical is in the works for Broadway. “Someday Soon,” based on a diary kept by a Polish teenager during the Holocaust, is being shepherded by Amy Langer and David B. Schwartz of Think System Productions with Tony Award-winning producer Cody Lassen. The show will soon schedule an out-of-town production for fall 2027.
Marcia Milgrom Dodge, the Tony Award-nominated director of the 2009 “Ragtime” revival, will direct the new musical, previously known as “Rutka.”
“Someday Soon” centers on real-life protagonist Rutka Laskier, who documented three months of her life during the Holocaust before she and her family were taken to Auschwitz, where she was killed, in August 1943. Laskier’s diary remained lost for 63 years before its rediscovery and publication in 2006.
The musical features a score and lyrics by Jocelyn Mackenzie and Jeremy Lloyd-Styles of the indie rock band Pearl and the Beard, with a book by playwright Neena Beber. Beber, a two-time Emmy Award nominee for her work on “Clarissa Explains It All” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” is the author of the plays “A Common Vision,” “The Dew Point,” “Tomorrowland” and “Jump/Cut,” and the recipient of an Obie Grant.
Under its original title, the musical premiered at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park in 2024. The creative team then participated in a residency at the Rhinebeck Writer’s Retreat in Clinton, New York.
“‘Someday Soon’ reflects both the continued evolution of this piece, and the extraordinary team helping to bring it to life,” said producers Langer and Schwartz in a joint statement. “The title comes directly from the intense hope Rutka expressed in her notebook in 1943 for the world to change for the better, which remains a timeless sentiment.”
“Someday Soon” co-producers include Eliot Horowitz, David S. Stone, Todd Rosen and Greg Steinbruner and Tami Stronach.
