Producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittleman are developing a stage musical adaptation of “Like Water for Chocolate.”
The musical adaptation of “Like Water for Chocolate,” which began as a novel and was later adapted into a film, will feature original music by Latin music group La Santa Cecilia and lyrics by the group and Quiara Alegría Hudes, who wrote the book to “In the Heights.” The musical will be directed by Michael Mayer (“Spring Awakening”) and feature a book by Lisa Loomer, playwright of “The Waiting Room.”
Laura Esquivel wrote both the 1989 novel and the 1993 screenplay of “Like Water For Chocolate,” which was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The story centers on a young woman in Mexico who is forbidden to marry her true love and then must choose between familial obligation and her own desires.
“The musical ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ waited until a group of extraordinary dreamers came together: La Santa Cecilia and Quiara Alegría Hudes, Lisa Loomer and Michael Mayer, and Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman, the ideal group to give voice to the culture that runs through our veins and waited years to be seen and heard,” Esquivel said in a press release. A production timeline has not yet been announced. Hulce and Pittelman are also the producers of “Ain’t Too Proud.”
