Internationally renowned singer-songwriter Ben Folds and storied television actor Lindsey Kraft are stepping into previously uncharted territory: the world of musicals.

Kraft’s solo show “We’ve Been Here Before: A One-Woman Musical” will debut at the Soho Playhouse on Aug. 4 for a two-week Off-Broadway run, though there are larger ambitions for the piece (read on). Kraft, who created and wrote the book, music and lyrics for the show, will star alongside onstage musicians Folds and Dan Rubin in the production co-directed by Machel Ross and Kraft.

Folds and Kraft have been on the road together for over a year, with Kraft opening for the Emmy Award-nominated musician’s concert tour. And if you see Kraft’s photo and think, I didn’t know the actor from “Grace and Frankie” and “Getting On” was a musical theater actor and writer — you wouldn’t be totally wrong.

Kraft has always been a writer, though a writer of scripts. “Not many people knew about it, but I had written a couple of pilots for network television shows that didn’t get picked up, and I started writing little plays,” she told Broadway News. “I wrote this one piece that had a little song at the end and I figured, ‘Well, I’ll just write this little thing.’”
