Licensor Music Theatre International (MTI) has made “Les Misérables” available for licensing. Amateur and professional theaters may now apply to license the full version of “Les Misérables” via MTI’s website. Geographical restrictions may still apply based on professional productions in the same region.
The full version of “Les Misérables” has been restricted for licensing for about 14 years. During this time, no professional or amateur groups were able to produce the show; however, the school edition of “Les Misérables” remained available for licensing to schools and theater groups with performers under 18.
Ahead of the general licensing release for amateur theater companies, MTI offered advance licensing opportunities to a number of professional and regional theaters.
Featuring a book by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, music by Schönberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, the original production of “Les Misérables” opened at the Broadway Theatre on March 12, 1987. It played for 16 years, becoming the sixth-longest-running Broadway show of all time.
Founded in 1952, Music Theatre International has distributed licenses to plays and musicals to over 100,000 professional, community and school theaters worldwide. It has a special focus on educational theater, offering Junior and School editions of many shows to theater groups of elementary, middle and high school-aged students.
