Kimberly Belflower’s Tony Award-nominated play “John Proctor Is the Villain” has announced a transfer to London’s West End. The play is currently playing at the Off-West End’s Royal Court Theatre (which is where the Broadway play “Giant” began). Following its final performance at the Royal Court on April 25, “John Proctor” will open at Wyndham’s Theatre on February 2, 2027, and run through April 24 of that year.
Danya Taymor, who won a Tony for her direction of “The Outsiders” before directing the Broadway and off-West End productions of “John Proctor,” will return to direct the West End staging.
“Bringing ‘John Proctor Is the Villain’ to the West End is a true honor and profound joy for us, especially on the heels of its very witchy UK debut in the Royal Court's 70th anniversary season,” said Bellflower and Taymor in a joint statement. “The play has been igniting London audiences, and we have fallen deeply in love with this great city. We are so grateful that our spells worked and more people will be able to see the play here — and come back again and again — at the incredible Wyndham’s Theatre in 2027.”
The play centers on a high school class in a small Georgia town reinterpreting Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” through a feminist lens, applying its themes to their modern-day lives. It opened at the Booth Theatre on April 14, 2025, and ran through September 7 of that year. The Broadway production was nominated for seven Tonys, including Best Play for Belflower and Best Direction for Taymor.
The West End production of “John Proctor Is the Villain” will be presented by Wagner Johnson Productions, Wessex Grove, Sonia Friedman Productions, Runyonland, Spark Productions, John Mara Jr. and the Royal Court Theatre.
