The live capture film of “Hadestown” has set a box office record. The film, entitled “Hadestown: The Musical,” grossed $10.2 million in 1,949 cinemas during its opening weekend, marking the highest-grossing opening weekend for a live theater capture at the North American box office.
The “Hadestown” cinematic release broke the record previously held by “Hamilton.” The Lin-Manuel Miranda musical grossed $10.1 million in its opening weekend across 1,825 North American cinemas, from Sept. 5-7, 2025. Notably, the 2025 cinematic release of “Hamilton” took place more than five years after its release on Disney+ in 2020. That capture has remained viewable on the streaming platform ever since.
“Hadestown: The Musical” is distributed by Bleecker Street’s event cinema division, Crosswalk, in collaboration with LD Entertainment. Due to popular demand, the distributors have announced plans to extend the film’s limited five-day run, with new dates and showtimes to be announced soon.
“We and LD always believed in the passion of the fans of this amazing show, and we are immensely proud of the campaign and result this weekend,” said Kent Sanderson, CEO of Bleecker Street, in a statement. “We are extending the run so audiences have even more time to catch up with this soul-stirring, iconic musical.”

“Hadestown” was written by Anaïs Mitchell, who first took the musical on a tour of her native Vermont before recording a concept-album version. A series of workshop productions followed, culminating in the musical’s Broadway opening at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17, 2019. The musical won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, best score and best featured actor in a musical for André De Shields.
De Shields appears alongside the remainder of the original Broadway principal cast (Reeve Carney, Amber Gray, Eva Noblezada and Patrick Page) in the live capture, which was filmed in London’s West End and features members of the current West End ensemble. The film had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 8 prior to its North American release on July 24. The Broadway and West End productions are directed by Chavkin; she directed the production for the live capture teaming up with film director Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound.
“Hadestown” is produced on Broadway by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy, all of whom serve as producers on the film.
