Grosses analysis: Broadway’s new season sees slower start post-Memorial Day

For the week ending May 31, the 40 running productions grossed $37,314,104.

Broadway box office grosses were down in the first week of the 2026-2027 season, despite putting up record numbers the season prior. For the week ending May 31, the overall gross decreased by 8.3% to $37,314,104. Attendance was down by 4.7% and capacity down by 3%. Notably, the Memorial Day weekend fell within the week prior (the final week of the 2025-2026 season). 

Also in Week 1 of this new season, grosses for “Every Brilliant Thing” fell by $1,161,151 following Daniel Radcliffe’s final week in the play., “Celebrity Autobiography” canceled its evening performance on May 28, and “The Book of Mormon” resumed performances on May 27 following repairs necessitated by a fire at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on May 4.

Compared to Week 1 of the 2025-2026 season, grosses are down by 17% (from $44,949,803). Attendance is down by 3.8% and capacity down by 2.3%. Average paid admission also decreased by $18.49 from last season to this season. The number of running productions was the same, and Week 1 of the 2025-2026 season also fell immediately after Memorial Day.
