Broadway’s “Every Brilliant Thing” is set to host a Black Mental Health Night later this month. The event is presented in partnership with the mental health organizations Vibrant Emotional Health, Fresh Youth Initiatives and Darkness Rising Project.
Following the play’s performance on July 30, all ticket holders are invited to remain for a talkback featuring star Tracee Ellis Ross, alongside Darkness Rising’s founding executive director Carlita Ector, Vibrant Emotional Health’s assistant vice president of community engagement Johnell (Jay) Lawrence and Fresh Youth Initiatives’ chief clinical officer Beatriz Oliva.

This isn’t the first mental health-related event for “Every Brilliant Thing.” On April 14, the show, then starring Daniel Radcliffe, hosted an LGBTQIA+ Mental Health Night talkback in partnership with the Trevor Project. The production has also partnered with the mental health nonprofit Project Healthy Minds.
All three partners provide mental health services: Vibrant Emotional Health offers remote support (call, text and chat), community programs, disaster services and wellness advocacy. Fresh Youth Initiatives provides free educational, mental health, youth development and family support programs to immigrant and first-generation children in NYC’s Inwood and Washington Heights neighborhoods. Darkness Rising provides free mental health resources, including wellness workshops and a therapist-finding service for children and formerly incarcerated people of color.
Written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, “Every Brilliant Thing” follows an unnamed character throughout their life as they compile a list of things worth living for. The Broadway production officially opened at the Hudson Theatre on March 12, and was nominated for Tonys for Best Revival of a Play and Best Leading Actor in a Play for Radcliffe. Ross, an Emmy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner for her role as Rainbow “Bow” Johnson on TV’s “Black-ish,” made her Broadway debut in the play on July 7. She is set to remain in the show through its closing on Aug. 9.
“Every Brilliant Thing” is produced on Broadway by Second Half Productions, Seaview, Gavin Kalin Productions and Pam Hurst-Della Pietra & Stephen Della Pietra.
