Broadway had its highest grossing week on record this season, as the industry welcomed Thanksgiving Day crowds.

The 33 shows performing in the week ended Nov. 28 grossed an aggregate total of $32.5 million. The productions operated at a collective capacity of 82.8%, with total attendance at 238,354, another high.

The week surrounding Thanksgiving kicks off the typically high-grossing holiday weeks for Broadway.

In 2019, the industry grossed a collective $41.7 million in the week surrounding Thanksgiving, albeit with 35 shows playing, compared to this year’s 33. Comparing the two weeks reveals that, on average, grosses per performance were down 12% this year.

The holiday week led to some uneven show scheduling, with some productions shifting show dates or going dark on Thanksgiving Day. “Chicago” cancelled its Nov. 28 performance due to COVID-19 cases in the company.

Last week on Broadway also saw the last performances of three shows, with “Is This a Room” closing on Nov. 27. and “Chicken & Biscuits” and “Dana H.” ending their runs on Nov. 28.

As always, the grosses are being released as collective totals for all shows, and therefore do not represent an accurate picture of all shows on Broadway.
