Broadway theater capacity rises as ticket prices tumble

Broadway grossed just $16.5 million last week, the second lowest on record this season, as the industry reported totals from a slim number of running productions.  There were 21 running productions in the week ended Jan.

Broadway grossed just $16.5 million last week, the second lowest on record this season, as the industry reported totals from a slim number of running productions.

There were 21 running productions in the week ended Jan. 23, down from 25 in the previous week, as “Ain’t Too Proud,” “Clyde’s,” “Flying Over Sunset” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” ended their runs — though “To Kill a Mockingbird” has plans to return. This marks the lowest number of running productions reporting grosses this season; however, Broadway only began publicly releasing grosses in late October.

Capacity across all running productions increased to 75%, the highest of the past four weeks. But, it came with an average ticket price of $108.42, the lowest this season. The low ticket price coincides with the start of Broadway Week, which began Jan. 18, and offers up to 50% on tickets to several Broadway shows. That promotion lasts through Feb. 13 and joins the discounts many Broadway productions are separately offering in order to get through the tough winter months.

The number of running productions will fall further in next week’s grosses report, as it reflects the closure of “Girl From the North Country” and “Slave Play” on Jan. 23. These reports are cumulative totals for the industry and therefore do not speak to the finances of any individual show.
