Nominations for the 2025 Tony Awards, honoring productions that opened on Broadway during the 2024-2025 season, have been revealed. Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce announced the slate of newly minted nominees on May 1 on CBS Mornings and on the Tony Awards’ official YouTube page.
In order to be eligible for nominations in the 26 competitive categories, productions had to open by April 27 and complete all other eligibility requirements as outlined in the Tony Awards’ rules and regulations. This season, 42 productions were eligible.
Three musicals led the nominations with 10 nods apiece: “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Death Becomes Her” and “Maybe Happy Ending.” All three were nominated for Best Musical. Completing the Best Musical roster were “Dead Outlaw” and “Operation Mincemeat.”
Play-wise, Kimberly Belflower’s “John Proctor Is the Villain” and Jez Butterworth’s “The Hills of California” each earned seven nominations, the largest number of any nonmusical. The two dramas were named in the Best Play category, alongside Sanaz Toossi’s “English,” Cole Escola’s “Oh, Mary!” and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ “Purpose.”
Rounding out the best show categories were “Eureka Day,” “Romeo + Juliet,” “Our Town” and “Yellow Face,” all of which were cited in the Best Revival of a Play category. Best Revival of a Musical comprised “Floyd Collins,” “Gypsy,” “Pirates! The Penzance Musical” and “Sunset Boulevard.”
The recipients of two special, noncompetitive awards were also named. The musicians who make up the band of “Buena Vista Social Club” will be honored: Marco Paguia (music director, conductor/piano), David Oquendo (associate music director, guitar), Renesito Avich (tres), Gustavo Schartz (bass), Javier Días, Román Diaz, Mauricio Herrera (percussion), Jesus Ricardo (trumpet), Eddie Venegas (trombone), Hery Paz (woodwinds) and Leonardo Reyna (piano). Additionally, the illusions-and-technical-effects team of “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” (Jamie Harrison, Chris Fisher, Gary Beestone and Edward Pierce) will also be recognized.
Of the 42 eligible productions, 13 received zero nominations: “All In: Comedy About Love,” “Cult of Love,” “Elf,” “Home,” “Left on Tenth,” “Job,” “McNeal,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” “Othello,” “Redwood,” “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends,” “Tammy Faye” and “The Last Five Years.”
As previously announced, the 2025 Tony Awards will take place on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall. Cynthia Erivo will host the ceremony, which will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
The Tony Awards are presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
