Tony Awards, COVID-19 impact Broadway box office

The impact of the Tony Awards and COVID-19 were felt at Broadway’s box office last week. For the week ending June 19, Broadway grossed $29,523,307, down about 6% from the previous week. The 29 productions – two fewer than last week – played to about 84% capacity.

The impact of the Tony Awards and COVID-19 were felt at Broadway’s box office last week.

For the week ending June 19, Broadway grossed $29,523,307, down about 6% from the previous week. The 29 productions – two fewer than last week – played to about 84% capacity.

“A Strange Loop” saw a significant post-Tony Awards boost. The Best New Musical winner played to nearly 100% capacity and grossed $845,313.44, up 17% and 25% from the previous week.

“MJ” saw a similar box office increase, grossing $1,660,978.00 – up 15% from last week. The musical also played to nearly 100% capacity after Myles Frost won the award for Lead Actor in a Musical.

“Paradise Square” was also among the productions seeing a post-Tonys boost. The musical saw a 47% increase at the box office, grossing $387,670 in its best week yet after Joaquina Kalukango took home the award for Lead Actress in a Musical.

“Company,” which took home five Tonys, including the award for Best Musical Revival, saw a 13% increase at the box office, grossing $727,178.49 and playing to 77% capacity. But the musical posted its closing notice and will end its run on July 31.

While “The Music Man” experienced a drop in grosses due to the absence of Hugh Jackman after he tested positive for COVID-19, the production surpassed $100,000,000.00 in gross ticket sales. The musical grossed $1,780,050 and played to 70% capacity while standby Max Clayton led the production.

Two productions played their final performances last week. “Hangmen” closed on the 18th, grossing $358,976.00 in its best week at the box office. “Girl From the North Country,” which closed June 19, played to more than 70% capacity for the first time in 2022, grossing $342,227.54.
