Sophie Carmen-Jones will return to the Broadway production of “Chicago” in the role of Velma Kelly beginning Sept. 29 at the Ambassador Theatre. She will succeed Bianca Marroquín, who will depart after the Sept. 28 performance.
Carmen-Jones previously played Velma Kelly earlier this year, as well as on the U.K. tour of the musical. She has also appeared as Nini in “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” in the West End and on Broadway.
Her additional stage credits include Francine in “Jersey Boys,” as well as roles in “Viva Forever!,” “Wicked” and “We Will Rock You.” Her film credits include “The Kiss of the Spider Woman,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Death on the Nile,” “Cinderella,” “Rocketman,” “Cats,” “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Casting is by ARC/Duncan Stewart, CSA, and Patrick Maravilla.
The current cast includes Mira Sorvino as Roxie Hart, Tam Mutu as Billy Flynn, Angela Grovey as Matron “Mama” Morton, Raymond Bokhour as Amos Hart and R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine.
The ensemble features Zach Bravo, David Bushman, Jessica Ernest, Jeff Gorti, Chelsea James, Arian Keddell, James T. Lane, Marty Lawson, Joseph London, Barrett Martin, Sharon Moore, Drew Nellessen, Celina Nightengale, Kristen Faith Oei, Denny Paschall, Mikayla Renfrow, Sean Samuels and Samantha Sturm.
“Chicago” features a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Ebb. Produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, “Chicago” won six 1997 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival. The production is directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinking. The creative team includes set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Ken Billington and sound design by Scott Lehrer. Alecia Parker serves as executive producer.
