Manhattan Theatre Club has canceled additional performances of “Skeleton Crew” and pushed its opening night date for a second time due to the detection of COVID-19 cases within the company.

The play, currently in previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, has now canceled performances through Jan. 9, after previously canceling from Jan. 1 through Jan. 6. This comes after the production delayed its first preview from Dec. 21 to Dec. 27 and its opening from Jan. 12 to Jan. 19 due to breakthrough cases of the virus.

As of Monday, the Dominique Morriseau play had been performed four times on Broadway. The new opening night date for “Skeleton Crew” has not yet been announced.

Many Broadway productions canceled performances in December due to breakthrough COVID-19 cases detected within the companies. The cancellations contributed to the closure of “Ain’t Too Proud,” “Thoughts of a Colored Man,” “Waitress” and “Jagged Little Pill.” “Mrs. Doubtfire” announced Sunday that it will take a hiatus from Jan. 10 to March 14 in order to avoid imminent closure.

Since the tumultuous holiday period, the pace of Broadway cancellations seems to have slowed. “The Music Man” is still dark through Jan. 5, but is expected to resume performances Jan. 6. “Come From Away” is closed through Jan. 6, with an expected resumption on Jan. 7. No other show cancellations had been announced as of Monday evening.

“Skeleton Crew” is directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson. The cast includes Phylicia Rashad, Chanté Adams, Joshua Boone, Brandon J. Dirden and Adesola Osakalumi. The production is currently scheduled to run through Feb. 20, 2022.
