Opinion: Make the Tony Awards more like the Grammys

All creative competitions are ridiculous, and in that respect, the Tony Awards are no different from the Oscars, the Grammys and the seasonal art auctions at Sotheby’s. With our votes or bids, they make us take part in pitting artistic works against each other solely for the sake of commerce.

All creative competitions are ridiculous, and in that respect, the Tony Awards are no different from the Oscars, the Grammys and the seasonal art auctions at Sotheby’s. With our votes or bids, they make us take part in pitting artistic works against each other solely for the sake of commerce.

The Tonys, however, always strike me as even more illogical than the others because the major categories — best play and musical and best revivals — make so little sense given the vast differences between shows. If awards shows are a necessary evil, let’s at least rethink them to more accurately reflect what’s on stage.
