Nick Scandalios, executive vice president of the Nederlander Organization, will receive this year’s Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award.

The special Tony Award is given each year to a member of the theater community “who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations.” Scandalios is specifically being honored for his advocacy and work with LGBTQ families.

In addition to working at the Nederlander Organization, Scandalios is the board chair of the Family Equality Council. In addition to their work with LGBTQ families, the council’s efforts led to the successful rulings for marriage equality in the Windsor and Obergefell Supreme Court cases.

Scandalios is also on the Board of Trustees for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

“Whatever Nick does, he does with passion, pride and purpose. Whether it’s his work on-stage or off, he gives 100% of himself,” Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League and Heather Hitchens, President & CEO of the American Theatre Wing, said in a press release. “In a time that is so critical for the LGBTQ community, his work and his commitment to the Family Equality Council has never been more important or inspiring.”

Baayork Lee was awarded this special Tony Award last year and was preceded by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Stephen Schwartz, among others.

The Tony Awards announced Monday that Chita Rivera and Andrew Lloyd Webber will receive special Tony Awards for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater.
