Theatrical licensor Music Theatre International (MTI) has secured the licensing rights to “Mrs. Doubtfire.” Based on the 1993 film from 20th Century Fox, “Mrs. Doubtfire” follows struggling actor Daniel Hillard who takes on the alter ego of nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire as a way to see his children following a divorce. The musical features a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell and a score by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick.

Licensing availability for “Mrs. Doubtfire” will be announced.

“We are incredibly excited to represent ‘Mrs. Doubtfire,’ which John, Karey and Wayne have masterfully brought to life on stage,” MTI president and CEO Drew Cohen said in a statement. “The tremendous and continuing success of the national tour and the recent West End production prove the enduring, audience-pleasing success of the show, following on from its Broadway run. It’s not easy to build upon a classic film, but ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ succeeds because it delivers laughs and heart, with several great roles, all in one beautiful theatrical package.”

“Mrs. Doubtfire” played three previews in March 2020 prior to the COVID-induced suspension of all Broadway performances. The Jerry Zaks-directed musical resumed previews in October 2021, opening on Dec. 5 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. The production took a hiatus from January to April 2022; its return engagement closed on May 29. The musical subsequently received a West End production and North American tour, the latter of which announced recoupment 29 weeks after its September 2023 launch. A production of “Mrs. Doubtfire” opened in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in 2024, a second national tour will play across the United States beginning in September 2025 and a German mounting will open in Düsseldorf in October 2025.

Other recent licensing acquisitions by MTI include “Shucked,” “Girl From the North Country,” “A Beautiful Noise,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “The Notebook” and “Suffs.” The licensor also recently launched “Broadway Senior,” a collection of musicals developed specifically for the needs and abilities of older adult performers.
