Music Theatre International has acquired the licensing rights to “Flying Over Sunset.” The musical is now available for licensing to all productions through MTI, although international restrictions apply.

“‘Flying Over Sunset’ is a wonderfully unique musical that will thrill audiences and provide adventurous directors a rare opportunity to flex their creative muscles,” said MTI president and CEO Drew Cohen in a statement. “James Lapine has written an original and heartfelt book that captures an exciting era and invites us to explore the meaning of individual desire, love and loss. Tom Kitt dazzles with a breathtaking score and Michael Korie provides deep insight with his captivating lyrics. We look forward to seeing new productions of this show on stages around the country as well as internationally.”

“Flying Over Sunset” opened at Lincoln Center Theater’s Vivian Beaumont Theater on Dec. 13, 2021. It was nominated for four Tony Awards. The musical centers on author Aldous Huxley, politician/playwright Clare Booth Luce and actor Cary Grant, all of whom experimented with the drug LSD, as they take a trip together. It features a book by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner James Lapine, music by Tony, Grammy Award, Emmy Award and Pulitzer winner Tom Kitt and lyrics by Tony nominee Michael Korie of “Grey Gardens.”

“We loved the challenge of creating ‘Flying Over Sunset’ and are thrilled that MTI will be licensing our musical,” said Lapine, Kitt and Korie in a joint statement. “Each of the main characters is facing a life changing juncture, welcome or not. For us it was an opportunity to look into ourselves through the perspectives of our characters and create a deeply personal show. Now we are excited to see new interpretations and perspectives from new artists for new audiences.”
