The Broadway League, the national trade association for the theater industry, has announced a new audience development initiative. Dubbed New Jersey Night on Broadway, the program will honor New Jersey-based theatergoers and is set to take place on Oct. 22. Select Broadway productions will offer buy-one, get-one-for $17.87 tickets (a nod to the year in which the Garden State entered the union, 1787) for the Oct. 22 evening performance, and buy-one, get-one-free tickets for the NJ Transit commuter trains and buses.
Twenty-one Broadway shows are slated to participate in the inaugural event, including “Aladdin,” “Beetlejuice,” “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Death Becomes Her,” “Hadestown,” “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Liberation,” “Maybe Happy Ending,” “MJ,” “Moulin Rouge!,” “SIX,” “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” “The Book of Mormon,” “The Great Gatsby,” “The Lion King,” “The Queen of Versailles” and “Wicked.” “& Juliet,” “Chicago” and “The Outsiders,” which do not have a scheduled evening performance on Oct. 22, will participate on the evening of Oct. 23.
Several theater district eateries will offer special discounts for program attendees, including Aldo Sohm Wine Bar, Applebee’s (42nd and 50th Street locations), Bar Mexicana, Becco, Carnegie Diner and Café, Chicken Guy, Gatsby’s Landing, Hard Rock Café, Havana Central, La Masseria, Langans, McHales, Mermaid Oyster Bar, Planet Hollywood, Pulperia, Rosie O’Grady’s and Spice Symphony.
“New Jersey audiences have always been a vital part of Broadway,” said League president Jason Laks in a statement. “We’re thrilled to recognize and celebrate our neighbors across the Hudson with this first-ever night dedicated to them. New Jersey Night on Broadway is about more than just great theatre, it’s a full evening out with friends and family that honors New Jersey’s connection to Broadway.”
