Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theatre will reveal a sculpture of the actor for which it’s named. The larger-than-life bronze bust of Jones, which will appear in the lobby, will be unveiled in a ceremony on June 16. The ceremony will be attended by Broadway community leaders and guests from the film and television industries.

The bust was sculpted by Littleton Alston, who specializes in depictions of historical figures. These include his sculpture of author Willa Cather, which made him the first African American artist to create a statue for Washington, D.C.’s National Statuary Hall. Commissioned by the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences (SOVAS), the project was also supported by Black Theatre United and the Shubert Organization.

“This sculpture is more than a tribute to an artist,” said Jones’ son, Flynn Earl Jones, in a statement. “It stands as a reminder of the depth, strength and humanity my father brought to his work and to the people who loved him. His voice carried wisdom, courage and compassion, and our family is deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this moment possible.”

Born in 1931, Jones was a prolific actor of stage and screen. Although perhaps best known for his voice work in “The Lion King” (as Mufasa) and the “Star Wars” franchise (as Darth Vader), Jones also had a long career on Broadway. He made his Main Stem debut in 1958 at what was then known as the Cort Theatre. He would go on to be nominated for five Tony Awards and win two for originating the lead roles in “The Great White Hope” and “Fences.” Jones also received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2017. In 2022, the theater where he made his Broadway debut was renamed in his honor, two years prior to his passing in 2024.

In addition to its display at the James Earl Jones Theatre, the bust will also serve as the model for the James Earl Jones Prize, which annually recognizes exceptional achievement in the performing arts. The inaugural prize was presented to Tony winner Laurence Fishburne at Society of Voice Arts and Sciences (SOVAS)’ 2025 Voice Arts Awards.

“James Earl Jones changed the landscape of American storytelling through his work and his voice,” said Rudy Gaskins, CEO and co-founder of SOVAS, in a joint statement. “We are proud to help celebrate his extraordinary legacy on Broadway.”

“This tribute recognizes not only what James Earl Jones achieved, but also the path he helped create for future generations of artists,” added Tony winner LaChanze, president of Black Theatre United.
