GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics kicked off Pride Month on June 1 by announcing the group’s fourth annual Dorian Theater Awards. Voted on by GALECA’s theater wing, the awards recognize excellence on Broadway and Off-Broadway in productions that range in subject matter, including but not limited to LGBTQ+ stories.
“Schmigadoon!” claimed Outstanding Broadway Musical and Outstanding Book of a Musical for writer Cinco Paul. “The Balusters” and “Giant” tied for Outstanding Broadway Play. Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman,” starring Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf, secured Outstanding Broadway Play Revival. “Ragtime” took home the trophy for Outstanding Broadway Musical Revival.
David Lindsay-Abaire won Outstanding Script of a Broadway Play for “The Balusters” while “Giant” star John Lithgow took home Outstanding Lead Performance in a Broadway Play.
In addition to its win in the musical revival category, “Ragtime” topped the Broadway field with victories for Outstanding Broadway Ensemble and Outstanding Lead Performance in a Broadway Musical for Joshua Henry. The production led Broadway’s winners with three wins.
“The Rocky Horror Show,” helmed by Sam Pinkleton, was awarded Outstanding LGBTQ Broadway Production, an honor recognizing theatrical work that spotlights LGBTQ stories and themes.
Voters also recognized past Off-Broadway productions making their marks on Broadway. Though “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” and “Titaníque” were ineligible for top production categories after winning Outstanding Off-Broadway Production in prior seasons, their Broadway runs received other accolades: “Titaníque” featured actor Layton Williams, new to the Main Stem production, won Outstanding Featured Performance in a Broadway Musical. “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” received The Broadway Showstopper Award for the musical number “Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat,” a vogueing performance led by Emma Sofia.
Special honors focused heavily on major community figures and activists. Qween Jean was named LGBTQ Theater Artist of the Season for her costume design work on “Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” “Liberation,” “Saturday Church,” “Angry Alan” and “Oh Happy Day!” Junior LaBeija, who currently plays Gus the Theatre Cat in “Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” received the LGBTQ Theater Trailblazer Award for his lifelong commitment to creating art that inspires empathy, truth and equity.
