Music industry executive Jason Flom has signed on to the producing team of “The Fear of 13” on Broadway. Flom makes his Broadway debut in the new play by Lindsey Ferrentino, which began previews on March 19 and opened on April 15 at the James Earl Jones Theatre.

“Nick’s story is one that changed me forever,” said Flom in a statement. “I have spent decades working to help shine a light on wrongful convictions, and bringing ‘The Fear of 13’ to Broadway is extraordinarily powerful — it allows audiences to feel deeply the truth of what happened. This is not just a story about injustice; it’s a story about resilience, humanity and the urgent need for change. I am honored to be part of a production that gives voice to the innocent and reminds us what is at stake.”

“The Fear of 13” centers on the true story of Nick Yarris, who spent 22 years on death row after he was wrongly convicted of murder. The new drama, directed by David Cromer, stars two-time Academy Award winner Adrien Brody as Yarris in his Broadway debut.

As a music executive, Flom served as chairperson of Atlantic Records, Virgin Records and Capital Music Group, where he helped develop artists like Stone Temple Pilots, Katy Perry and Lorde. He is also the founder and CEO of the multimedia company Lava Media, which produces podcasts, TV series and music under its subsidiary label Lava Records.

The son of a lawyer, Flom told NPR his interest in criminal justice reform stemmed from his own history of substance abuse, and his awareness of disparities in how such cases were treated. He has since been an advocate for the wrongfully convicted, including Yarris, and has served as a founding board member of the Innocence Project and a board member of the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice. Flom also co-hosts the Wrongful Conviction podcast, which features interviews with people who have been incarcerated for crimes they say they did not commit.

“The Fear of 13” is produced by Seaview, Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions.
