Leslye Headland’s play “Cult of Love” is being adapted for the big screen. Headland is penning the screenplay and directing the motion picture adaptation of her drama which played Broadway during the 2024-2025 season. Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum will produce the film under the banner of their Tony Award-nominated Gloria Sanchez Productions.
“Cult of Love” follows the Christmas Eve reunion of the Dahl family’s parents, four adult children and their respective partners. The Dahls’ song-filled holiday traditions are challenged by conflict as the family grapples with what can bind them together and tear them apart.
“Leslye’s voice is singular — darkly funny, wildly insightful and deeply human,” said Elbaum in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to help bring ‘Cult of Love’ to a wider audience.”
“To be making ‘Cult of Love’ with Will and Jessica — two producers who champion bold, unapologetic storytelling — is a true creative homecoming,” added Headland. “This story has lived in my bones for years, and I can’t wait to bring it to the screen with partners who embrace its chaos and heart.”
This announcement marks a continuation of the longtime collaboration of Headland and Gloria Sanchez Productions. The production company, which earned a 2009 Tony nomination for Best Special Theatrical Event for the Ferrell starrer “You’re Welcome America,” previously produced Headland’s films “Bachelorette” and “Sleeping with Other People.”
Following previews that began on Nov. 20, 2024, “Cult of Love” opened on Broadway on Dec. 12 at the Hayes Theater. The Second Stage Theater-produced production completed its limited engagement on Feb. 2, 2025. Trip Cullman directed the play, whose cast included Molly Bernard, Roberta Colindrez, Barbie Ferreira, Rebecca Henderson, Christopher Lowell, Zachary Quinto, David Rasche, Christopher Sears, Mare Winningham and Shailene Woodley.
Casting and production timeline for the film version of “Cult of Love” will be announced.
